Basic WordPress Onpage SEO Theory for Beginners

WordPress Onpage SEO

As we know, WordPress is the most widely used self-hosting website/blog platform in the world. This is because the WordPress platform is very easy to set up, there are lots of beautiful free themes scattered on the internet, rich in thousands of plugins, and so on. However, everyone who has a blog definitely wants a lot of visitors to the blog, therefore there are some basic theories to ensure that your blog is optimized for Search engine search aka SEO Onpage.

Use a Responsive Theme

What does SEO have to do with responsive themes? that’s a question I often hear. In today’s technological era, smartphones, be it Android phones, Android tablets, iPhones, and iPads are very widely used. In mid-2014, Google reported that as many as 54.5% of Google search engines were conducted via mobile devices.

Now Google has a mobile Googlebot which will rank all websites in mobile search engine searches. So in essence, the search dynamics of desktop vs mobile search engines will be different. The difference is that on mobile search engines, it pays close attention to responsive design or mobile-friendly design of a website so that for websites or blogs that don’t have a responsive theme, it will be difficult to recommend on mobile searches on Google which results in unresponsive websites that will lose mobile traffic.

If for friends who are still in doubt whether the template or theme that is being used is responsive or not, then you can check it on Google mobile-friendly Test

Create SEO Friendly WordPress permalinks

There are so many mistakes that occur for WordPress newbie bloggers who do not change their permalink structure in the WordPress settings section. Even though the permalink structure is one of the important points in Onpage SEO. Here are some examples of WordPress permalinks:

  1. http://www.dosenhosting.com/?p=123
  2. www.dosenhosting.com/folder/17483956/xl/635397.htm
  3. www.dosenhosting.com/how-to- make-WordPress/
  4. www.dosenhosting.com/blogging/ how to make-WordPress/

Permalink number 1 and number 2 are types of permalinks that are not SEO friendly because they do not fill in any information about the post, keywords, and titles. While number 3 and number 4 are SEO friendly permalinks. To just share, my blog uses custom domain no 4 with the following structure:

www.dosenhosting.com/%category%/%postname%/

Creating an Interlink

Interlinks are links that are on a blog and directed to other articles or posts on the blog itself. The main function of interlinking is to make it easier for search engine bots to crawl and index all posts and pages on a website or blog. In addition, interlinking can also reduce the bounce rate of a blog and make the article readers gain more knowledge that is presented in a blog.

Installing an SEO Plugin

There are two very well-known SEO plugins on wordpress.org, namely the All in One SEO Plugin and the  SEO by Yoast PluginHere I will explain the features of these two plugins one by one.

All in One SEO Plugin

This plugin is very helpful for my friend to optimize the SEO on your blog, here are all the features that are included in this plugin:

  • Can automatically submit sitemap on google and bing
  • More advanced Canonical URLs feature
  • Fine-tune Page Navigational Links
  • Support for SEO on Custom Post Types
  • Has Google Analytics Features
  • Built-in APIs so other plugins/themes can access and extend the functionality
  • Can prevent duplicate content on blogs
  • Can be integrated directly with the WP e-Commerce sites
  • Very supportive for CMS-style WordPress installations
  • For beginners, you don’t need to be confused about setting it up because it has gone well.
  • It will automatically optimize post titles on various search engines.
  • Can create meta tags automatically.
  • For advanced users, you can fine-tune everything to optimize your SEO

SEO Plugin By Yoast

In my personal opinion, this Yoast plugin has more features than the All in One, following the features that Yoast has but not in the All in One.

  • Has been completed with breadcrumb
  • RSS Optimization
  • There are edit features. Htaccess and Robot.txt
  • Has direct social media features
  • equipped with a page analysis feature

Setting up Robots.txt

Robots.txt is a file that can instruct all search engine bots that come along how to crawl and index your blog or website. For those who don’t know robots.txt and how do you set it up? Please read this article  for more knowledge and tutorials

Blog Content

This is the most important part, content is king. Make original content and creative articles. Don’t forget to use Heading on your post to make it easier for Google to understand the points of the article you wrote, avoid spelling mistakes, and so on. Regarding the problem of keywords in the article, my friend must pay attention to the keyword density, keep the keywords in the article around 3 – 8% and never use keyword stuffing.
